So, is it totally weird for me to say that I’m just kind of sick of blogging? I mean, I am, but I’m not. I wish I could use some sort of voice-to-text software to put how I really feel into words. I’m in a funk, clearly, and I haven’t been too great at expressing myself lately. Perhaps I should try some video posts?
Well, as you may have assumed these first few weeks of monitoring my blood sugar has been interesting. I’ve been stable for the most part–a couple highs, a couple lows. I still haven’t gotten used to the finger pricking…
ME: Does it hurt?
NURSE: Oh, no. You can barely feel it, and if you do feel it, you get used to it.
ME: Well, okay, so I just press this in and then push the button against my finger like this and…OUCH!
In any case…I wish that nurse wasn’t a liar.
My wife has been amazing at trying her best to ensure we eat the right foods, and I’m really grateful to her for that.
I’m also grateful to all of you who’ve been checking on on me. My blogging has taken a turn for the worse each semester and I continually get busier. I can only laugh when people assume that I (or ANY other doctoral student for that matter) has ample amounts of time to do whatever they want. Maybe some, but definitely not me. I am helping my major professor prepare a new edition of his book, writing a section of a teaching supplement for that book, working on a book chapter with him and another co-author, writing a book chapter of my own that’s due in a couple of weeks, submitting a couple of manuscripts to journals for reviews, working on several conference papers and starting to organize my data and model for my dissertation.
I’m busy.
So, I think in order to keep me motivated I’m going to have to make some changes. I don’t know what those changes would be off the top of my head, but change seems to help me focus on the big picture. My right knee has been bothering me for sometime so the running has more or less come to a halt. So, my good friend zapped a copy of Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred over to me. Jillian is about to become my new best friend, because seriously folks, I have to exercise. To break out of her monotony, I think it’s high time I bust out DDR a bit more, que no?
So, I’m curious? What do the rest of you all do when your current exercise routine gets boring? I mean I mostly run and ride a stationary bike. But I got rid of the bike (mostly for man related issues
) and my knee is bugging me.
Other than Jillian Michaels and DDR…any suggestions?

With your knee would you be able to walk fast? I NEVER get sick of walking. Really. I notice nature around me and I think and ponder things and I really enjoy it. Try just walking and see if that works for awhile.

I got absolutely hooked on step aerobics one summer at home when it was too hot to exercise outside. I would recommend it to anyone. I think the step things are expensive, though, so I would also recommend finding any aerobics dvd at the library and alternating it with your Jillian one. There are some pretty fun ones these days – kickboxing, hip hop dancing, boot camp, etc. For the knee…swimming laps or treading water at the local pool?

I never got used to the finger sticks (had gestational diabetes, so I was finger sticking 4 times a day for 8 months). EVER. EVER. Not only did the sticks themselves hurt, but after a while, my finger tips ached CONSTANTLY. Good luck with that.

I think Jillian and DDR is a great place to start. Plus, Rhys and I are going to start taking more walks when the weather gets better. You could always join us for a walk. That would be awesome!

Running is my hobby too. I’m running 3 circles per 800 m per day.

Nurses get paid big bucks to lie!
I’ve been reading up on your blog today, and I love the creative tagline with the 180 and the 360. And also the reference to “Tommy Boy.” Very nice! I was almost at 360 myself so I’m on the same road. Sometimes I too get tired of writing and trying to keep up with blogland. The days I feel like that I just take a break. It’s worth it in the end because it provides an outlet and also holds us accountable. You’re doing great, and I’ll be back to read more.

Hi Fat Guy,
Weight loss is the key to control your blood sugar. Once your weight is back to normal you don’t need finger pricking anymore. Do you need any better encouragement?
The nurse was honest about the pain. Have you ever heard about Diabetic Neuropathy (find it here http://diabetes.niddk.nih.gov/dm/pubs/neuropathies/)? The diabetic neuropathy causes lack of sensation in many diabetic patients and actually many of them don’t feel anything. I love this OUCH because it is telling me that your nerves are still in good shape and your blood long-term sugar control has been successful.
I can understand jugging and daily exercise routines become boring so the key is to add some fun or adventure to it. Can you consider kayaking? How about hunting (Rabbit, pheasant, woodcock and don’t even think about duck, turkey or dear)? Fly fishing is also a wonderful choice and you walk for miles without really feeling it.

Great blog and very motivating. I read about your blog on another weight loss blog (kimkinsdiet.blogspot.com). I’ll visit again soon. Happy losing!

If you do it on the side of your finger it doesn’t hurt as badly, sometime it doesn’t hurt at all.
Since I’m on my 4th round of gestational diabetes…I do understand. Please try to avoid getting on insulin…although…giving myself shots has become kind of passe’ as well. *looks at the time* well, gotta go stick my own finger and record my sugars…good luck.

Just found your blog
I also bike (stationary) and walk. That’s it. I can’t do much else because of knee issues. When I get bored, I walk someplace new. I watch a new movie when I bike. Oh, and I did buy a couple of gentle yoga DVDs but havent tried em yet. And strength training, that’s fun
Hope you come back!
