So, I did, in fact, wake up this morning and my back felt significantly better. There was still some pain, but I am doubting any trouble with the disc. Truth is, really, I don’t know.
I decided to go ahead and at least walk to get some exercise in. The new shoes felt great and so did my back, so I decided to run. Todays intervals required two repetitions of 90s run/90s walk/3 min. run/3 min. walk — and I DID IT! I actually managed to run for three minutes straight for both intervals. I was floored. Maybe it was the fact that most of my course was flat, or that it wasn’t as humid as normal (though we got a nice monsoon storm here in Arizona last night). Regardless, I did it, and I’m quite happy…not to mention I recorded my best pace so far at 14:28.
I cooled down a bit and sat and rested for a while in the living room. After about a half hour, I stood up.
Ouch.
My back hurt again. So, now I’m stymied at how I managed to run without pain. Was it a good thing? Or should I wait until my back is indeed healed? Either way…I’m taking it slow over the weekend and am going to hopefully get some good pool time!
Well, I finally went to New Balance (which is more or less the only ‘running’ store within 25 miles of my house). I had the guys there look at my gait, and they told me I definitely supinate on one foot, and not as much on the other. They recommended the 768s. They’re nice, a little big in the toe box (in fact, I’m going to exchange the 4E’s I got for 2E’s…because blisters and me? Uh uh) and are very comfy. I hope they work out all right. I read a lot of reviews on them – some negative, but most were positive, especially from the big guys. Either way, I’ll be sure to give it my own, fair review.
I am off to Arizona and Nevada for ten days tomorrow to see family before my little boy arrives, and have set aside time for my runs and workouts. After the horrid humidity I ran in this morning…seriously, more like a swim…I am looking forward to some parched, dry heat (though it is getting close to monsoon season there).
I’ll be sure to keep you updated from the desert!
Hi all.
Hope everyone had a great weekend. Ours was pretty good…no complaints, other than the fact that I wanted to run, and didn’t.
On several occasions this weekend, I thought my ankles were fine, but then the pain came back. Never once did I think in the previous three weeks that I overdid it, but evidently I did. So, I swallowed my pride and acknowledged that I probably needed to lay off a bit. Thursday, Friday and Saturday all saw plenty of time on the stationary bike, today saw nothing, and tomorrow I’m hitting the road again. It was hard to go several days without what I’ve built into a somewhat normal regimen, but I think it will be worth it in the long run (no pun intended).
So, some of you may recall that I decided to take traineo up on their whole motivators thing (I usually wouldn’t, but figured that this time around it would be worth it). I have chosen three out of the four and am currently trying to search for a fourth. I’ll be sure to profile these guys and gals as soon as I complete the motivator team.
As for shoes, my journey to find the right one continues. I’ll hopefully get to the New Balance store this week, or if not, will visit the Roadrunner Sports store in Tempe, AZ where I’ll be visiting family for the next week or so. I have to take care of these feet! I have a friend willing to give me a discount on Adidas shoes that he sells, which might be the best case scenario. This is the part I hate most about being a graduate student: self-inflicted poverty.
Time to sleep…I’m running tomorrow come hell or high water!
After yesterday’s run, I’ve decided that the shoes I’ve been training in are most likely not the best situation for someone who literally pounds the pavement when he pounds the pavement.
I have mostly used a pair of Saucony running shoes (Grid Formula 2) that I bought on sale from Eastbay a few years ago. I also often use my pair of Merrell Moab Ventilator Cross-trainors (pictured above). I purchased them from REI when I lived in Arizona speciafically for the hiking my wife and I did. They’ve been great for that purpose, for general walking, biking, and I guess did okay when I used them in my previous races. They’re comfortable, wide, and have a great sole on them. However, I don’t think they were meant to be used as road running shoes, though my feet, ankles and shins don’t seem to pay as much of a price the following day as with the Sauconys.
So my question to you all is, what kind of shoe do I need to get?
I am probably okay with keeping the Merrells as training shoes for a while, but will eventually need to get a good running shoe that can support my frame. I have read that the Brooks Beast is usually a good shoe for a big guy like me, as well as a certain model of New Balance (maybe 992’s?) for bigger folks, but was also specifically recommended the NB MR1123.
One thing I know about my feet is that I do not overpronate…in fact, I don’t know that I pronate at all, because my foot tends to roll out, as opposed to in. I have also been counseled to go to an actual running store and get some measurements to find the best shoe…though I’m unsure if there happens to be one of these where I live. There might be a New Balance Store near me, but if not, I suppose I could drive into Atlanta sometime and go to Phidippides (damn you, Jeff Galloway, you win again).
I’m aware that I’ll probably have to sink a pretty penny into the shoes, but if they keep me running and injury free, it will be worth it!
